What Happens At Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Price Jarman

Before you determine what window covering to get, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By taking samples to you, we can present how various window coverings would look with your decor. You’ll discover how natural it is to find the right window covering when you aren’t in the sterile showroom.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how will showing you different products at your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst regularly performs these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will see at your visit.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

A couple viewing samples of window treatments.

Begin by arranging an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you a variety of options related to your preferred treatment. We will also bring additional treatments, so you can be sure that your room matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and discuss what you need in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what ambiance you are trying to accomplish. We want to execute your final vision, so the more you tell us about your needs, the better.

That may require going through different products until we discover the perfect window treatment for you. Most clients need to try out a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to match your color scheme. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only need to make a purchase for a portion of the house. We do this because many of our clients ask to be able to order future shutters or blinds with just a phone call. Finally, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Bad In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will give you professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment salesperson. It should go without saying, the quality of your consultation experience usually equals the quality of the product.

Primarily, your salesperson should treat your home with respect. They should arrive when promised, clean and presentable, and offer to protect your floors with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing details.

In regards to pricing, you should always get a full written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, scrawled on a blank page or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates if they won’t measure your windows. You need to be able to follow how much you should pay and why. If a quote ever seems sketchy or unreasonable, simply ask for references and look up the store’s online reviews.
