What To Expect At Your Salt Lake City In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

Before you determine what window covering to get, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By taking samples to you, we can present how different window treatments would look with your decor. This process makes it easier to visualize your options and makes you feel satisfied with your decision.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Even though every in-home consultation is individualized, there are a few constants that you should see.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by arranging an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you a variety of options related to your preferred choice. We will also bring other options, so you can be sure that your windows match your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and figure out what you need in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what ambiance you are trying to accomplish. The final goal is to complety conceptulaize what your decor will ultimately look like with the treatments installed.

That may require going through different products until we discover the best window treatment for you. Most clients want to look at a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the perfect stain to match your color scheme. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll take precise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only need to buy window treatments for some of your windows. We do this because many of our clients ask to be able to order future shutters or blinds without another consultation. Before we leave, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Bad In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment salesperson. It should go without saying, the quality of your consultation experience usually equals the quality of the product.

Primarily, your rep should respect your home. They should arrive when promised, with all samples requested, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing details.

When it comes to price, you should expect a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scrawled on a blank page or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates if they won’t measure your windows. You should always be able to follow how much you should pay and why. If a quote ever seems sketchy or unreasonable, simply ask for references and check the company’s online reviews.
