How To Control Light From your Salt Lake City Windows

April 02, 2018

There are a lot of reasons you may want to control the light coming from your windows in Salt Lake City. Say it’s from ambient street light, cars constantly driving down your street, or ordinary sunlight, controlling the light coming from your windows is necessary for a good night’s sleep.

For those in dire need of better sleep, here are a few ways Salt Lake City homeowners can best block light through their windows.

What Window Coverings Block Light The Best?

Lots of Salt Lake City window treatments claim to block light, and you can basically divide them into three groups: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here’s what you need to know.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Good

The best window treatments to black out your windows should do a few things:

  • Effectively prevent light from coming in.

  • Adjust easily depending on your needs throughout the day.

  • Look stylish.

The window covering that best fits all these criteria is Salt Lake City plantation shutters. When you shut the slats, shutters create an almost complete seal on your windows, blocking almost all the light. Sunburst Polywood shutters also come with built-in weatherstripping that covers the gaps around your window frame, making them even more effective. And unlike cheaper shutters, Polywood will never warp or split, which can result in gaps in between the louvers and frame.

And unlike some chintzy DIY window blackout solutions, shutters look beautiful in your home. Instead of looking like some hardware, they’re as fashionable as they are effective.

A second option for the “good” category is room-darkening cellular shades. These are made with thick and layered material to keep out most light, and extend beyond your window opening. There can be some miniscule spaces around the edges of the window where light can peak in. But for a non-shutter product, room darkening shades make a pretty good option.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Bad

Here we have window coverings that don’t quite get the job done when it comes to blocking out light. Any type of fabric window treatment, from curtains to drapes, will allow some light in if they aren’t both very thick and extend past the perimeter of your window.

Even heavy-duty blinds don’t fare well, since the slats on blinds are always going to let slivers of light in. That means light is going to come in, even if it’s at a very slight angle.

Light Controlling Window Treatments – The Ugly

Search for “Salt Lake City window blackouts” on the internet and you might find some easy to use DIY sheets that you can hang up in your window frame to completely black it out. Most of them are customizable to your window’s dimensions, and adhere to the window frame via velcro or something similar. And for the most part, they work fairly well.

But there are a few drawbacks with these products. First off, they don’t look great. Most of these products give up fashion for function. So if you put in of these blackout sheets, be sure to do it in an area that you don’t mind looking dull.

Second, for being easy to do it yourself, you’d better hope that you won’t have to remove and put them back up often. The adhesive or velcro that attach them to the wall can wear off fairly quickly, which means you have to head back to the store for another one.
